Masai Mara · Serengeti · 8 nights
Eight nights from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti, paced around the days that matter.
Eight nights across two stops: the Masai Mara for four nights and the Serengeti for four. Every transfer between them is private and timed around the day's plan.
The days are built around Game Drives on the Plains, Endless Plains, Mara River and the Migration and Balloon Safari and Maasai Community. Each one is set out below with what you will see, how you get there and which meals are included.
The defining moment of this route: dawn balloon safari with a champagne bush breakfast. Your travel specialist can add a night, swap a day or change the order before you book.
Day by day
Arrive at Nairobi Wilson, about 45 minutes by light aircraft to the Mara airstrips and transfer privately to your base. Time today to arrive in time for an afternoon game drive and sundowners on the plains.
Dawn and late-afternoon drives for lion, elephant, buffalo, cheetah and, with luck, leopard and rhino. Sightings are never guaranteed and conservancies allow off-road tracking where the national reserve does not.
Following the herds towards the Mara river crossings, which happen roughly July to October and cannot be scheduled: you wait, sometimes for hours, and sometimes nothing crosses.
A dawn balloon flight over the plains with a bush breakfast on landing, and a visit to a Maasai community arranged through the conservancy rather than as a roadside stop.
Fly by bush plane between the Mara and Serengeti, or drive via the Ngorongoro highlands. On arrival, settle into camp and take an afternoon drive on the short-grass plains.
Game drives across the southern plains and the Seronera valley, where the kopjes hold leopard and lion and the river draws game year round.
The herds move in a rough annual circuit: calving on the southern short-grass plains around February, the western corridor mid-year, the north from July. Camps move with them.
Descending into the caldera, a 260-square-kilometre bowl with resident lion, elephant and one of East Africa's last black rhino populations. Vehicle permits are timed.
A final morning drive on the way to the airstrip. Private transfer to Kilimanjaro or Arusha in good time for your onward flight.
The herds are usually in the Masai Mara from about July to October, with river crossings most likely from August. They move south into the Serengeti later in the year. Dates shift with the rains.
Kenya requires an online Electronic Travel Authorisation and Tanzania an eVisa, both before you fly. A yellow fever certificate may be asked for when crossing between countries.
By light aircraft via a border airstrip, or by road through a border post. Your plan shows the route we use for your dates.
Three to four months ahead gives the widest choice of rooms and guided days, and more for school holidays, festivals and peak season. Shorter notice is often possible; ask and we will check live availability.
Yes. Every journey is a starting point: add or remove nights, swap a day's plan, change hotels or reorder the route, and your travel specialist re-plans the whole trip around it.
Your quote sets out the deposit that confirms the booking and the date the balance is due. Both depend on the hotels, airlines and guides involved, so they are agreed with you before you pay anything.
