Windhoek · Sossusvlei · Swakopmund · 9 nights
Nine nights from Windhoek to Swakopmund, paced around the days that matter.
Nine nights across three stops: Windhoek for three nights, Sossusvlei for three and Swakopmund for three. Every transfer between them is private and timed around the day's plan.
The days are built around Namibia's Capital, Dunes at Dawn, Where the Desert Meets the Atlantic and Highland Reserves. Each one is set out below with what you will see, how you get there and which meals are included.
The defining moment of this route: dawn balloon flight over the red dunes. Your travel specialist can add a night, swap a day or change the order before you book.
Day by day
Arrive at Hosea Kutako International, about 45 minutes by road into the city and transfer privately to your base. Time today to rest and eat before the long drive into the desert tomorrow.
The Christuskirche, Independence Memorial Museum, the Katutura township with a local guide, and the craft centre for Himba and Herero work.
A morning at a private reserve in the hills outside the city for cheetah conservation work and a first look at the escarpment landscape.
Drive or fly southwest into the Namib-Naukluft park. On arrival, arrive for sunset over the dunes from a lodge viewpoint.
Through the Sesriem gate at sunrise for Dune 45 and Big Daddy, then the white clay pan of Deadvlei with its 900-year-old camel thorn skeletons. Heat builds fast after nine.
A dawn balloon over the dune sea with a champagne breakfast, a guided desert ecology walk, and stargazing in one of the darkest skies on earth.
Drive north from Sossusvlei through the Kuiseb canyon to the coast. On arrival, walk the German colonial seafront in the cold Atlantic air.
Swakopmund's German colonial architecture and cafés, the jetty, and a living desert tour into the dunes for chameleons, geckos and sidewinders with a specialist guide.
A catamaran among pelicans, seals and dolphins in Walvis Bay, and a 4x4 run down to Sandwich Harbour where the dunes drop straight into the ocean. Tide dependent.
A last coastal morning before the drive or flight out. Private transfer to Walvis Bay airport in good time for your onward flight.
May to October is dry, with cool nights and clear skies. November to April is hot, with occasional thunderstorms.
Long. Windhoek to Sossusvlei is about five hours on gravel roads, and Sossusvlei to Swakopmund about five more. Light aircraft transfers can be added.
Yes. Big Daddy and Dune 45 are popular climbs at sunrise. Start early, as the sand heats up quickly.
Three to four months ahead gives the widest choice of rooms and guided days, and more for school holidays, festivals and peak season. Shorter notice is often possible; ask and we will check live availability.
Yes. Every journey is a starting point: add or remove nights, swap a day's plan, change hotels or reorder the route, and your travel specialist re-plans the whole trip around it.
Your quote sets out the deposit that confirms the booking and the date the balance is due. Both depend on the hotels, airlines and guides involved, so they are agreed with you before you pay anything.
