Lisbon · Sintra · Douro · 8 nights
Eight nights from Lisbon to Douro Valley, paced around the days that matter.
Eight nights across three stops: Lisbon for three nights, Sintra for three and Douro Valley for two. Every transfer between them is private and timed around the day's plan.
The days are built around Alfama and the Old City, Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle, Quinta Visits Above the River and Belém and the Age of Discovery. Each one is set out below with what you will see, how you get there and which meals are included.
The defining moment of this route: private quinta harvest lunch above the Douro. Your travel specialist can add a night, swap a day or change the order before you book.
Day by day
Arrive at Lisbon Humberto Delgado, about 20-30 minutes by road to the centre and transfer privately to your base. Time today to walk down through Chiado to the river and watch the light go from a miradouro.
A walking morning through Alfama's lanes to the Sé cathedral and São Jorge castle, with the tram lines and viewpoints that thread the hill between them.
The Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, both UNESCO listed and closed on Mondays, with the original Pastéis de Belém bakery and the coach museum nearby.
Drive or take the train up into the Serra de Sintra above the coast. On arrival, walk the historic centre once the coach parties have gone for the day.
Timed entry to the Pena Palace on the ridge, then the walls of the Castelo dos Mouros. Both are busy; the earliest slot of the day is the difference between a good and a poor visit.
The initiation well and grottoes of Quinta da Regaleira, then the National Palace in the town centre and the pastry shops around it.
Drive north from Sintra to the Douro, about four hours, or take the train to Porto and continue on the Douro line to Régua or Pinhão. On arrival, settle at a quinta and watch the terraces change colour at the end of the day.
Two working estates on the terraced slopes, with vineyard walks and tastings that explain the difference between port styles and the valley's still wines.
Breakfast above the vines before the drive back down the valley. Private transfer to Porto airport or Campanhã station in good time for your onward flight.
May to June for green terraces, and September to early October for the grape harvest. July and August are very hot inland.
About three and a half hours by road, or by train via Porto. Your plan includes a private transfer so you arrive in time for lunch at the first quinta.
Staying overnight means you reach Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira before the day-trip coaches. Timed tickets for Pena are booked in advance.
Three to four months ahead gives the widest choice of rooms and guided days, and more for school holidays, festivals and peak season. Shorter notice is often possible; ask and we will check live availability.
Yes. Every journey is a starting point: add or remove nights, swap a day's plan, change hotels or reorder the route, and your travel specialist re-plans the whole trip around it.
Your quote sets out the deposit that confirms the booking and the date the balance is due. Both depend on the hotels, airlines and guides involved, so they are agreed with you before you pay anything.
