Cappadocia's balloons lift at first light, when the air over the Göreme valleys is coldest and stillest. You fly in a private basket with a Turkish Civil Aviation-licensed pilot, drifting low between the fairy chimneys of Love Valley before climbing for the wide view across Uçhisar and the Rose Valley. Flights are weather-dependent and are cleared each morning by the civil aviation authority.

Wind direction decides the route each morning. These are the five areas flights typically cover, in the order pilots usually work them.
The tallest fairy chimneys in Cappadocia — pilots descend to within metres of the rock spires here.
The rock-cut monastery complex and painted cave churches, seen from directly above.
The highest point in the region, a hollowed rock citadel that catches the first light.
Layered pink and ochre tuff that changes colour minute by minute as the sun climbs.
Dovecotes carved into the cliffs, usually the landing approach on a northerly wind.
Collected from your cave hotel between 4:30am and 5:30am depending on season.
Tea and pastries while the envelope inflates, plus a safety and landing-position briefing.
Sixty to ninety minutes: low passes through the valleys, then a climb to around 800 metres.
The crew catches the basket on a trailer, then champagne, a certificate and the drive back to breakfast.
April to June and September to early November have the highest flight-clearance rates. January and February are beautiful over snow but cancel most often.
Around one morning in five is grounded across the year, mostly for wind. We build a spare morning into your itinerary wherever possible and refund in full if no morning flies.
Children aged six and above may fly with a parent; they must be tall enough to see over the basket edge, roughly 1.1 metres. Under-sixes cannot fly.
Very little. You stand for the whole flight and must be able to climb into the basket unaided and adopt a braced landing position.
A private basket carries two to four guests with the pilot, no queueing and a flexible route. Shared premium baskets carry sixteen in partitioned compartments.
Layers, closed walking shoes and a cap. Mornings are near freezing October to March; the burner keeps your head warm but not your feet.
Yes, from any hotel in Göreme, Ürgüp, Uçhisar, Avanos or Ortahisar. Pickups further out are arranged for an added transfer fee.
Guests over 120 kg are asked to notify us for basket balancing. Pregnancy, recent surgery and severe cardiac conditions preclude flying.
Six to eight weeks in peak season. The daily number of balloons is capped by the authorities, so late requests are often waitlisted.
