A privately guided night dive on a Maldivian house reef or a nearby manta station, where lights on the boat draw plankton and plankton draws reef mantas that barrel-roll within arm's length. Above the water, disturbed bioluminescent plankton lights the shallows on dark nights. The dive is run one-to-one or one-to-two with a PADI divemaster, on a traditional dhoni.

Your divemaster picks the site by current, moon phase and atoll. These are the five we most often run.
Boat lights aggregate plankton and mantas feed in a slow chain — the signature Maldivian night encounter.
A UNESCO biosphere feeding ground. Snorkel only, no scuba, from May to November when the lunar tides mass the plankton.
Shallow sandy night sites where nurse sharks, marbled rays and eagle rays come in to hunt.
On new-moon nights the disturbed water glows blue-green — best seen wading or on a paddleboard, not at depth.
Daytime addition: the year-round juvenile whale shark aggregation along the Maamigili reef.
Site, current, lost-buddy and light-signal procedures reviewed at the dive centre at around 6pm.
Fifteen to thirty minutes by dhoni, entering the water just as the last light goes.
Forty-five to fifty minutes at eight to eighteen metres, with the boat lights working above you.
Tea, towels and a slow cruise home over glowing water on a dark night.
Manta activity peaks in Baa Atoll from May to November on the southwest monsoon. December to April has the clearest visibility and calmest crossings.
PADI Open Water or equivalent, with at least ten logged dives. A night-diver speciality is not required as the guide runs the dive one-to-one.
Yes. Snorkellers can join the same boat for the manta lights and bioluminescence, and a Discover Scuba session can be run in daylight beforehand.
No. Encounter rates are around seventy per cent in Baa Atoll during season, lower outside it. Your guide will tell you honestly what the week has been like.
With one-to-one guiding, redundant torches, marker lights and a crewed boat above you, it is routine. Current-swept channel sites are not used at night.
Allow a minimum of 18 hours after the last dive before a flight, including seaplane transfers. Plan the dive for the start of your stay, not the day before departure.
PADI Junior Open Water divers from twelve may join with a parent, at reduced depth. Younger children can snorkel the bioluminescence from the shallows.
Not permitted. Maldivian manta codes require you to stay low, still and below the animals; the guide will end the dive if a diver breaks it.
Baa, South Ari, North Malé and Raa. We match it to the resort you are staying at, or add a liveaboard night if you want several sites.
